Marilyn Monroe keeps inspiring many artists including myself. However, only a few know about her short life story and mysterious death.
In her prime she managed to attract millions of fans without any social media. An orphan turned model turned movie star, singer, sex symbol and style icon, here is her story.
Marilyn Monroe’s real name was Norma Jeane Baker. She was born on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California.
Growing up, Monroe spent much of her time in foster care and in an orphanage, due to her mother’s unstable mental condition. Her mother was diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic and placed in the mental institution.
She end up in different foster families, until one of her faster parent talked her into marrying so she can be more independent and live on her own.
As a kid, Norma Jeane spent a lot of her free time in movie theaters, watching and idolizing Jean Harlow, a superstar of the twenties.
Marilyn would later say…“and so Jean Harlow was my idol.” That was the main reason she died her hair platinum blond.
During World War II (1939–45) a war fought between the Axis powers: Japan, Italy, and Germany—and the Allies: England, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States), Norma Jean worked at the Radio Plane Company in Van Nuys, California, she was soon discovered by photographers. Read More
How Marilyn Stayed in Shape
In an interview from Pageant magazine, she admits that in her 30’s she had to start working out 10 minutes in mornings with her own routine using small weights.
Light jogging, yoga and horseback riding were one of the activities she enjoyed.
Her diet was very similar to Paleo diet. Here is what she told in her interview:
Breakfast: Warm milk with two raw eggs whipped into the whole mess.
Dinner: Steak, lamb or liver, which she would broil and eat with 4 or 5 raw carrots.
The most prominent Monroe conspiracy theorist in the 1980s was British journalist Anthony Summers, whose 1985 book Goddess: The Secret Lives of Marilyn Monroe.
She was becoming addicted to drugs. Sleeping pills to help her relax at night and more pills to give her energy to get her out of bed and work during the day. Based on my research, she wasn’t drinking that much, but did like occasional champagne, she preferred the best, Dom Perignon.
Monroe was psychoticafter one her trusted doctor put her in the mentalinstitution. Thankfully, Joe DiMaggio got her out of there and helped her get back on her feet. Marilyn, had to take a break from filming due to the health issues.
During this crazy time, in addition to her emotional and mental health, Marilyn experienced a variety of physical disorders. In May 1961, she entered Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles for gynecological surgery.
All this is probably due to the various miscarriages she had. Monroe suffered two miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy during her three marriages.
The following month, she found herself in the Polyclinic Hospital of New York for a gallbladder operation. In addition, Marilyn suffered from an ulcerated colon and abnormal bleeding from the uterus.
Joe DiMaggio took care of Marilyn during this difficult time. He always helped as much as she let him until the last days of her life. She got better, lost 15 pounds and got in the best shape of her life.
In April, Marilyn got a role to Twentieth Century-Fox to begin production on Something’s Got to Give. This was suppose to be her long awaited comeback.
As 1962 began, Marilyn’s psychiatrist Dr. Ralph Greenson suggested that she buy a house of her own, because Marilyn had never owned a house by herself.
She had a few important man in her life, one of them was the famous American writer Arthur Miller.
The Mysterious Death
In the last months of her life, she had affairs with both Kennedy brothers.
She wanted to marry one of them, not caring which one, but Robert F. Kennedy ended their affair some weeks before her death, which led her to threaten to publicly reveal their association.
In order to avoid scandal, Kennedy, together with his brother-in-law Peter Lawford, who also was a good friend of Marilyn went to see her and try to talk to her. Peter was, the one who introduced her to JFK.
Anyhow, they made sure that Monroe was supplied with enough drugs/pills and alcohol to keep her quiet. Both Kennedy and Dr. Greenson visited her on her last day alive as she had been hysteric, but after they left, Monroe accidentally overdosed.
She was found unconscious and died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. As Kennedy wanted to leave Los Angeles before the death became public to avoid being linked to her, Monroe’s body was returned to her house and the overdose was staged as a suicide by Lawford, the Kennedy’s and J. Edgar Hoover working together.
There is a lot of theories about her death, one thing was obvious she did not suicide. There was no way she could swallow all those pills without any liquid, and there was no water or any liquid found at the scene. So how did all those pills got into her body?! One of the hypothesis is enema.
Marilyn Monroe got more more famous and more respect as an actress after her death then while she alive. She was considered as a joke and treated as “dump blond” that she portrayed in her films.
Marilyn Monroe’s career as an actress spanned 16 years. She made 29 films, 24 in the first 8 years of her career.
